Laguna Diesel Running Rich

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2004 Renault Laguna diesel. The engine is running far too rich. I've noticed reduced engine power, the check engine light is on, rough engine running, significantly higher fuel consumption, and a jerking sensation when accelerating. The car has 225978 km on the clock. Could a defective injection valve or injector be the culprit? I've already checked the intake manifold and oxygen sensor, but everything seems fine.

Summary of the thread

The 2004 Renault Laguna diesel is experiencing issues with running too rich, leading to reduced engine power, a check engine light, rough running, high fuel consumption, and jerking during acceleration. The problem is suspected to be caused by a defective injection valve or injector, as other components like the intake manifold and oxygen sensor have been checked and found to be fine. After visiting a workshop, it was confirmed that a defective fuel injector was the issue, and after repair, the car is running smoothly again.

I had a similar problem with my Renault Megane. Have you checked the spark plugs? When were they last changed? The symptoms you describe sound very familiar. In my case, the check engine light was also on and my fuel economy was terrible. Is the rough running constant or only at certain speeds?

The spark plugs were replaced approximately 30000 km ago. The rough running is most noticeable at lower speeds and during acceleration, especially when the engine is cold. Could it still be the spark plugs, even with relatively recent replacement?

While 30000 km isn't excessive, with those symptoms, it's worth double-checking. However, based on your description, a defective injector is a strong possibility. The diagnostic would be difficult and specialized. I'd recommend a visit to a trusted workshop.

I took it to the workshop, and you were correct – a defective fuel injector was indeed the problem. The repair, including parts and labor, cost 515€. The car is now running smoothly again.
