Land Rover Defender's AC Mystery: Help Needed

Hey everyone! Got a bit concerned about my 2022 Land Rover Defender Hybrid (157,315 KM). The AC has been acting up lately, barely any cold air coming through, and the overall temp control seems off. I'm thinking it might be the ambient temp sensor playing tricks, but not sure. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar AC/temperature control issues in their Defender? What was the actual problem and were you happy with how your mechanic handled it? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Land Rover Defender Hybrid owner is experiencing issues with the AC not blowing cold air and inconsistent temperature control. Suspecting the ambient temperature sensor might be the cause, they seek advice due to a previous unsatisfactory mechanic experience. Another person shares a similar experience with a different Land Rover model, where a faulty ambient temperature sensor connection was the issue, resolved by cleaning and replacing a corroded plug. Encouraged by this, the Defender owner gets their vehicle checked and finds the sensor itself was failing, leading to a successful repair and restored AC functionality.

Hey there! I faced a similar issue with my 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport Hybrid last month. The symptoms were exactly like yours, weak AC performance and inconsistent temperature control. Initially thought it was low refrigerant, but turned out to be a faulty ambient temperature sensor connection. Took it to the garage, and they found a corroded plug connecting the sensor to the main system. The insulation had worn off, causing intermittent signal issues. Not a major repair, they cleaned the connection points, replaced the plug, and secured the wiring properly. The whole thing took about 2 hours. It wasn't a serious issue, but definitely something that needed fixing before it could damage the AC control module. Been working perfectly since then, and the AC is back to blowing ice-cold air. Would suggest getting it checked soon, these sensor issues can sometimes mess with other temperature-dependent systems if left unattended.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since my symptoms sound identical to what you had. Mine's getting worse by the day, and your post gives me hope it might just be something relatively simple like that connector. Would you mind sharing how much the repair set you back? Also, curious to know if everything's still running smoothly or if you've noticed any other quirks since the fix? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm in for when I take it to the shop. Cheers!

Hey again! Happy to report that after getting it fixed, my Discovery Sport has been running like a dream! The repair was actually pretty reasonable, came to 95.00 € for fixing the faulty cable connection to the ambient temperature sensor. Money well spent, if you ask me! I totally get why you're asking about any lingering issues, I was worried about the same thing. But honestly, since they sorted out that wonky sensor signal, everything's been spot on. The AC is still blasting properly cold air, and the temperature control is working exactly as it should. No weird quirks or issues at all in the past month. The repair was actually quicker than I expected too, the mechanic knew exactly what they were looking for after I described the symptoms. Really sounds like you're dealing with the same thing I had. Best to get it sorted soon though, you definitely don't want to be stuck without proper AC! Let me know how it goes when you get yours checked out!

Thanks so much for all the details! I went ahead and took your advice. Got it checked yesterday and, would you believe it, it was almost exactly what you described! Though in my case, they found the sensor itself was failing, not just the connection. Repair cost a bit more at 175.00 €, but totally worth it. The mechanic I found was fantastic, really took the time to show me what was wrong and explain everything. Such a relief after my previous experiences! The whole job took about three hours, mainly because they did a full AC system check while they were at it. Just drove it home, and wow, what a difference! The AC is blasting cold air again, and the temperature control is working perfectly. Should've done this weeks ago instead of putting it off. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the push I needed to get this sorted. Cheers for the help!
