Land Rover Defender ABS & Airbag Warning Light Mystery

Hey there! Having some concerns with my 2014 Land Rover Defender (diesel, 62,310 km). My dash is lighting up like a Christmas tree, airbag and ABS warnings won't go away, and the ABS/DSC isn't working at all. I think it might be the lateral acceleration sensor acting up, but I'm hesitant about taking it to a mechanic after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar warning lights in their Defender? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Any recommendations would be really appreciated! Thanks

I had a similar issue with my 2011 Land Rover Discovery 4 (3.0L diesel). Last month, multiple warning lights popped up, ABS, DSC, and airbag lights, just like yours. Took it to my trusted mechanic who diagnosed a faulty ABS control unit. The control unit needed complete replacement, wasn't just a sensor issue as I initially thought. It turned out to be quite serious since the ABS module controls both the anti-lock braking and stability control systems. Driving without these safety features working properly isn't safe. The repair involved replacing the entire ABS/DSC module and recoding it to sync with the car's computer system. Took about a day and a half to complete. Don't try to keep driving with these warnings, get it checked soon. These systems are crucial for safety, especially in emergency braking situations.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! This sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'm definitely going to get it checked out soon, you're right about the safety concerns. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? And has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Glad I could help with my previous reply. Yes, I had it fixed and it cost me exactly 1000.00 € for the complete ABS/DSC control unit replacement and recoding. Since the repair, everything's been running perfectly smooth, all those annoying warning lights are gone, and what's even better, the error in the lateral acceleration sensor that was causing all this trouble has been completely sorted out. The ABS and stability control systems are working like new now, and honestly, it's such a relief to have everything back to normal. Haven't had a single issue pop up since the fix, and my Discovery feels much safer to drive. It was definitely worth every penny, even though it wasn't exactly cheap. Take my advice, get yours checked out soon. These safety systems aren't something you want to mess around with!

Thanks for the detailed info! I bit the bullet and took my Defender to a mechanic yesterday. You were spot on, it was the ABS control unit causing all the trouble. The repair cost was actually a bit less than what you paid, around 850€, probably because they found a good deal on the part. The funny thing is, when I got there, the mechanic took one look at the dash and said "Ah, classic Defender issue!" Apparently, he sees this pretty regularly. The whole thing took about 6 hours to fix, and I must say, the difference is night and day. All those Christmas tree lights are finally gone, and the braking feels much more responsive now. Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. The mechanic was actually great, none of that bad experience I was worried about. Thanks again for pushing me to get it sorted. Now I can finally drive without stressing about those warning lights!
