Land Rover Discovery Running Rough? Smoke & Stalling Signs

"Hey everyone! My 2010 Land Rover Discovery (134k km, gas engine) is giving me nightmares. The engine's behaving really weird, black smoke when I accelerate, constant jerking, and struggling to start. Engine light is on too. Power feels way down, and fuel consumption is through the roof. When it's idle, it shakes like crazy and sometimes stalls. My gut says it's the ignition coils, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I wanted to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Did you have similar issues? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Thanks in advance!"

Hey there! I had really similar issues with my 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (gasoline). The symptoms you're describing are exactly what I experienced, the jerking, black smoke, and that annoying rough idle. Took it to the garage last month, and it turned out the cable connection to one of the ignition coils was damaged and corroded. The wire insulation had worn out, causing intermittent connection issues. This was causing misfires and all those symptoms you mentioned. The fix involved replacing the damaged wiring harness and two ignition coils. It wasn't a super serious issue, but it definitely needed immediate attention to prevent further damage to the catalytic converter. The repair was pretty straightforward, and the car's been running smooth since then, no more shaking, normal fuel consumption, and the engine light's gone. If you're experiencing these exact symptoms, I'd definitely get those coils and connections checked out soon. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as I'm seeing those exact same symptoms. Sounds like I'm on the right track with suspecting the ignition coils. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since, or have you noticed any other issues popping up? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for what might come next. Really appreciate your help with this!

Hey again! Great news, I can actually give you a precise update now since I dealt with this issue! The total repair came to 365.00 € for fixing the cable connection to the ignition coil, and I'm happy to report it was money well spent. The mechanic confirmed my original suspicion about the ignition coil problem. They found it was causing those misfires we talked about earlier. Since getting it fixed, my Range Rover Sport's been running like a dream, no more jerking, black smoke, or any of those annoying symptoms we discussed. It's been about a month since the repair, and honestly, everything's working perfectly. Fuel consumption's back to normal, no more rough idling, and that pesky engine light hasn't come back on. The engine's running super smooth now, and I haven't noticed any new issues popping up. One thing I learned from this, it's definitely worth getting these symptoms checked out quickly. Waiting too long could've led to more expensive problems down the road. Let me know how you get on with yours! Always happy to help a fellow Land Rover owner!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! Just got back from the mechanic today, and you won't believe it – my issue was almost identical to yours! The mechanic found corroded wiring and two faulty ignition coils. I took your advice and didn't wait around – got it fixed right away. Cost me a bit more than yours at 450, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The difference in how the car runs now is like night and day! No more black smoke, jerking, or that annoying shake at idle. The engine light's finally off, and my Discovery is running super smooth again. Fuel consumption has dropped back to normal too, which is a huge relief for my wallet. Really grateful for your help in pointing me in the right direction. Saved me from a lot more headaches and potentially bigger problems. You were spot on about getting it checked quickly! Thanks again for sharing your experience – it really helped me make the right decision!
