Land Rover Discovery: Dead Battery or Keyless Entry Issue?
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Land Rover Discovery is experiencing issues with locking and unlocking, weak and flickering lights, and a malfunctioning radio. These symptoms suggest potential problems with the keyless entry system or electrical wiring. A similar case involved damaged wiring and corroded connections, which were resolved by replacing cables and cleaning ground points. The recommended solution is to inspect and repair any damaged wiring and connections, particularly focusing on moisture and corrosion issues.

Thanks for the detailed reply! My Discovery has 183927 KM on the clock and was last serviced about 2 months ago. Actually, I've noticed the issue affects all doors, and I'm still using the original key fob. Recently, the radio has also been acting up, sometimes turning off by itself. The battery is fairly new, replaced it about 6 months ago, but these electrical gremlins are getting worse. Your experience with the wiring issue sounds similar to what I might be dealing with. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair took? I'm trying to figure out if I need to arrange for alternative transport while it's being fixed.

Hey again! Thanks for the extra details about your Discovery. Yeah, my Freelander had similar mileage when these issues started popping up (around 175,000 KM). The radio problems you mentioned, that's exactly what happened to me too! It was super annoying, especially when it would cut out during drives. About the repair time, in my case, it took the workshop about a day and a half. The tricky part was tracking down all the damaged wiring, these old Land Rovers can be quite complicated when it comes to electrical systems! My mechanic found that moisture had gotten into several connections over the years, causing corrosion. They had to trace multiple circuits because once one part starts acting up, it tends to affect other systems too. Based on what you're describing, especially with the radio issues and all doors being affected, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I experienced. The fact that you've got a new battery but still having problems pretty much rules out a simple battery issue. Quick tip from my experience, while you're getting it fixed, have them check the ground connections too. My mechanic found a couple of corroded ground points that were adding to the problem. They cleaned those up as part of the repair, and it made a real difference. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. I'm curious if it turns out to be the same issue!

Thanks so much for all this information, it's super helpful! I feel a lot better knowing someone else has dealt with similar issues. I'll definitely get it checked out next week and make sure they look at those ground connections you mentioned. The day and a half timeline actually works well for me, I can probably borrow my 's car for that long. It's interesting how similar our problems are, right down to the radio acting up! Really appreciate you sharing all the details about your repair experience. I'll make sure to tell the mechanic about the moisture and corrosion you mentioned too, might help them diagnose it faster. I'll update you once I get it sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out with this, it's been stressing me out not knowing what was wrong, but now I at least have a good idea of what to expect!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars. I had a similar problem with my 2003 Land Rover Freelander diesel. The symptoms were exactly like yours, door locking issues and flickering lights. Turned out the cable connection to the door handle electronics was damaged, causing all sorts of weird electrical problems. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found that the wiring had worn out over time. They had to replace some cables and reconnect everything properly. The whole thing cost me about 170 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. Before I can give you more specific advice, have you noticed any other electrical issues? Does this happen with all doors or just one? Are you using the original key fob? Let me know these details and I might be able to help further!
