LandCruiser audio system failure

Experiencing a frustrating issue with the audio system in my 2005 Toyota LandCruiser (gasoline engine) with 66660 km. The system is completely silent; there is no audio output whatsoever. I've checked the fuses and connections behind the head unit, but everything appears to be in order. Could a defective speaker cause the entire system to shut down?

That's a common problem. I experienced the same thing in my old BMW 3 Series, although my issue was sound distortion. The car speakers were shot. Have you tried testing with an auxiliary input or noticed any sound quality degradation before it completely failed? Volume control issues can also point to speaker problems.

Thank you for your reply. I haven't tried the auxiliary input yet, but there was no sound distortion or volume control problems before it stopped working entirely. Could a defective bass speaker really cause the entire system to go silent?

Yes, it's possible. A shorted speaker can sometimes trigger the amplifier's protection circuit, shutting down the whole system to prevent further damage. Given that the auxiliary input didn't make a difference, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to have the speakers properly tested.

Thanks for the confirmation and the quick responses. I took it to a workshop as suggested, and you were right; the bass speaker was defective, and it caused the amplifier to shut down. The repair cost was 280€. The audio system works again.
