LandCruiser Automatic Transmission Defect

My 2000 Toyota LandCruiser (gasoline engine, 90012 km) is playing up. The automatic transmission seems to have a defective parking position. Engine won't start, check engine light's on, gearbox slips, and I've got an error stored. Suspect control unit. Anyone seen this before?

Hey there. That sounds remarkably like the issue I had with my old Saab 9-5. Different beast, I know, but the symptoms are spookily similar. With the Saab, the car refused to acknowledge it was in park, so it wouldn't start. It was like the car had lost its mind! Was your LandCruiser exposed to heavy rain lately?

Interesting. No heavy rain recently, but it's been pretty humid. You reckon it's an electrical issue then, like a sensor or something gone haywire? Was it a difficult fix on your Saab?

Yes, in my case it was like a short circuit. The mechanic told me that it was a faulty control unit that was not sending the right signal to the engine. I had to have the car towed to the workshop, so you may consider doing that to avoid further damage. I am pretty sure you have the same problem and will need a new one. It was not cheap...

Thanks for the insight. Appreciate you sharing your experience. Looks like a trip to the shop is in order. I'll advise on the outcome once I know more. Looks like my wallet will be 1000€ lighter. Cheers!
