LandCruiser check engine light exhaust smell
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Toyota LandCruiser is experiencing a check engine light, rough engine performance, and a strong exhaust smell. Possible causes include a defective lambda sensor or an exhaust leak. The lambda sensor, which monitors exhaust gases, is identified as a likely culprit. A workshop visit confirms the lambda sensor defect, leading to its replacement.

I don't see any obvious damage. Haven't noticed black smoke. More fuel... possibly. What does the lambda sensor do?

The lambda sensor monitors the exhaust gases; if it fails, the engine can run poorly, causing the symptoms you describe. An exhaust leak is also possible. However, given the symptoms and mileage, a defective lambda sensor seems plausible. I would advise bringing it to a workshop.

Thanks. Workshop confirmed it. Lambda sensor was defective, 375€ repair.

Could be a few things. Is the exhaust pipe damaged? Any black smoke? A rough idle and exhaust smell might indicate a problem with the catalytic converter or a defective lambda sensor. Has the car been using more fuel than normal?
