Yeah, those bubbles can mess with the auto sensor. If you see them, it's likely the culprit. You may need a workshop to sort it properly.

Thanks for the suggestion, it was indeed the bubbles. Workshop replaced the gel pad. Repair cost was 62€. Issue resolved.

I've got a LandCruiser too, and that sounds familiar. Did you check for bubbles forming under the gel pad of the windshield around the sensor?
