Latitude Crankshaft Camshaft Reference Value Error

My 2012 Renault Latitude diesel is throwing me for a loop. The check engine light is on, and I'm experiencing reduced engine power, sluggish response, and shockingly high fuel consumption. My OBD reader is reporting a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' error. I suspect a defective crankshaft sensor, could it also be the timing chain?

The crankshaft to camshaft reference value error often points to timing issues. While a faulty crankshaft sensor is possible, have you considered checking the timing belt/chain? Has it ever been replaced, and what's the mileage?

The mileage is currently at 155489 km. Is it possible that the timing chain stretched, causing the reference value to be off? And if so, would replacing the chain and the sensor fix this?

A stretched timing chain at that mileage is definitely a possibility. It can throw off the engine synchronization. While replacing the sensor is a good start, I'd recommend having a workshop confirm the chain's condition. Ignoring a stretched chain can lead to more serious engine damage.

Thank you! I took your advice and brought it to a shop. Turns out, the timing chain was indeed stretched, causing the reference value issue. Replacing both the chain and the crankshaft sensor (as it was also starting to fail) cost me 340€, but now the engine runs perfectly again!
