Lexus ES Air Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Lexus ES hybrid owner experienced a check engine light issue, diagnosed as an air valve problem. The mechanic suspected a defective hose connection from the pump to the valve. After further investigation and a smoke test, the issue was confirmed to be a defective hose, which was subsequently repaired.

Thanks, I don't hear any unusual noises during cold starts, but the engine light usually comes on after a cold start. Does that point to a problem with the valve itself, or is the hose connection still the likely cause?

Since the light comes on after cold starts, the hose is still suspect because it hardens over time. But without more diagnostics, it's hard to say for sure. I'd suggest a qualified technician do a smoke test to find any leaks in the system.

Thanks for the advice. A smoke test was the next logical step. I took it to a local mechanic, and the defective hose diagnosis was correct. The total repair was 175€, including parts and labor. Thanks again!

I own a Lexus ES too. I had a similar problem once. The air valve might be part of the secondary air injection system, which pumps fresh air into the exhaust during cold starts to reduce emissions. Do you hear any weird noises in the first few minutes after starting the car?
