Lexus ES Torque Converter Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Lexus ES is experiencing issues with the check engine and transmission indicator lights on, along with slipping shifts and grinding noises. Diagnostic codes suggest a torque converter problem. The issue is more pronounced when the engine is warm and under load. The recommended solution is to have the torque converter diagnosed and repaired by a reputable workshop to prevent further damage to the transmission.

It seems to be happening more when the engine is warm, especially under load, like going uphill. The error memory did have some other codes related to misfires, but I figured those were a consequence of the transmission problems. Did you find that converter failure was the culprit in your case?

Yep, converter failure was exactly what it was! Get it to a reputable workshop and have them diagnose it properly. Ignoring it will only cause more damage to your automatic gearbox. It's not cheap, but better to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions! I took it to my local shop and they confirmed it was the torque converter and quoted me 2120€. It's a painful expense, but good to know it'll be running smoothly again.

I had a similar issue with my ES, though it was a few years newer. Slipping, weird noises... the whole shebang. Was it happening consistently, or only under certain conditions? Did the error memory have anything else besides the converter fault?
