Lexus GS 2013 Model: Troubleshooting Black Smoke from Exhaust and Noticeable Power Loss Issues

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Longer cold start time

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Hey! I've been having a bit of trouble with my Lexus GS (2013 model, Gasoline engine). I've noticed black smoke from the exhaust when I accelerate, the check engine light is always on, it takes longer to start when it's cold and I've been dealing with significant power loss. Additionally, it's been jerking on acceleration, guzzling more fuel than usual, and there's a noticeable stench coming from the exhaust. I suspect it could be an issue with the mixture control, possibly running too rich, but wanted to check if anyone else has dealt with this? Any tips on troubleshooting, your workshop experience or how you got it fixed would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 Lexus IS, pretty close to your GS. I'd say I have some experience messing around with cars but I'm no expert. After observing similar symptoms to yours (poor acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, and that nasty smell), I took it to my local garage. They ran a diagnostic and found the root of the problem to be a defective fuel pressure regulator. To get it fixed, I had to shell out 250€, which wasn't too bad. To better assist you, can you let me know if your car's troubles are constant or intermittent? And what's the current mileage of your vehicle? This info could help pin down your issue more accurately. Cheers!

Hey, appreciate the response! The problems I've been experiencing seem pretty constant, especially when the engine's cold. As for the mileage, she's clocked about 62691 KM. Hopefully, this helps in zeroing in on the issue. And thank you for sharing your experience with your Lexus IS, sounds very similar. I’ll take a look at the fuel pressure regulator and get a diagnostic test done at my local garage. Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious. Cheers!

Hi again! Given the constant nature of the issues, your suspicion about faulty mixture control could be spot on. Especially since your mileage isn't too high for a 2013 model, it's less likely to be due to general wear and tear. Getting the car diagnosed is definitely the way to go – but keep in mind, if it's the fuel pressure regulator, it can directly affect the mixture control. It happened with my IS; the bad regulator was providing too much fuel into the mixture, causing it to run richer than necessary. Hence all the black smoke and the exhaust stench. So, if it turns out to be the case, changing it should resolve the problems you've highlighted. Good luck with the diagnostic, and hopefully, it'll be a quick fix like mine was. Let us know how it pans out! Take care and safe journeys!

Hiya again, That makes a lot of sense, I never thought the fuel pressure regulator could have such an impact on the mixture. I'm learning so much from this convo! I'm going to get the diagnostic test done later this week and I'll definitely keep your tip in mind about the fuel pressure regulator and its effect on the mixture control. I really hope it's something that can be fixed as quickly as yours. I'll let you know how it goes. True, the mileage isn't very high for a 2013 model, fingers crossed it isn't due to wear and tear. Thanks for the insights and wish me luck! Take care and happy motoring!
