Lexus GX engine stalling at idle
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Lexus GX is experiencing engine stalling at idle and a persistent check engine light. The issue may be linked to a fuel tank ventilation system leak, potentially caused by a defective purge valve or a faulty activated charcoal filter. The charcoal filter, part of the emission control system, is not easily accessible, so professional diagnosis is recommended. After taking the vehicle to a workshop, the problem was confirmed to be a defective activated charcoal filter, which was repaired, resolving the stalling issue and turning off the check engine light.

Thanks for your reply! Fuel efficiency seems normal. Where exactly is this charcoal filter located? Is it something I can check myself?

While fuel efficiency staying normal is good news, it does not rule out a ventilation issue. The charcoal filter is usually located near the fuel tank. Unfortunately, it is not easily accessible and requires some technical knowledge to diagnose properly, so it might be best to take it to a workshop. They can perform a leak detection test to pinpoint the exact cause. If it is the charcoal filter, it will definitely impact your emission control. You don't want to risk failing any emission tests.

Okay, I understand. Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be a defective activated charcoal filter, just as you suspected. The repair cost me 275€. The engine runs smoothly again, and the check engine light is off!

I had a similar issue with my Lexus GX. The symptoms sound like a fuel tank ventilation system leak. Have you noticed any changes in your fuel efficiency? The check engine light is triggered because the system detects an abnormal pressure in the fuel tank. This could be caused by a defective purge valve or even a faulty activated charcoal filter, which is part of the emission control system and is responsible for filtering fuel vapors.
