Lexus GX oil pressure warning
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Lexus GX owner experienced an oil pressure warning light despite the oil level appearing normal but dark. This issue could indicate oil contamination or sludge buildup, possibly from neglecting regular maintenance. An oil and filter change might resolve the problem, but a professional diagnosis is recommended to assess potential engine damage. After consulting a mechanic, the issue was resolved with an engine cleaning and oil change, eliminating the warning lights.

Thank you for the quick response! I am not sure about the oil age. I have traveled 218231 km with the car. Could a simple oil and filter change solve this or is something more drastic needed?

At that mileage and with the oil looking dark, it's highly probable that sludge has accumulated. Imagine it like cholesterol clogging your arteries, hindering oil flow. An oil and filter change might help, but the warning lights suggest the damage is done. I would advise taking it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis. They can check the oil pressure and assess the extent of the contamination before it causes irreversible damage.

I appreciate the advice. You were right, I took it to a local mechanic. They confirmed oil contamination and after cleaning the engine and an oil and filter change (costing 165€), the warning lights are gone. I will pay more attention to the maintenance schedule from now on.

That dark oil is a red flag. Think of your engine like a kitchen – if you don't clean the grease regularly, it builds up and causes problems. Dark oil suggests contamination, potentially from exceeding your maintenance interval. How many kilometers are on the oil, and when was the last oil and filter change?
