Lexus LS Camshaft Sensor Issue

I'm having a weird issue with my 2022 Lexus LS hybrid. It's got about 35,000 km on it. Recently, it's been starting rough, sometimes stalling at idle, and the check engine light is on. I scanned it, and it's throwing a code related to the camshaft sensor. Anyone experienced anything similar? Could it be a faulty sensor, or is something else at play here?

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Lexus LS hybrid with 35,000 km is experiencing rough starts, stalling at idle, and a check engine light indicating a camshaft sensor issue. The problem may be due to a defective camshaft position sensor or an encoder wheel on the camshaft causing incorrect sensor readings. The recommended solution is to have a professional diagnosis, which in this case led to replacing both the encoder wheel and the camshaft sensor, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar problem with my LS, though it wasn't the hybrid version. Camshaft position sensor issues can be tricky. Does the code specify which camshaft sensor is the problem, or is it a general code? Also, have you noticed any changes in fuel economy or engine performance besides the stalling?

The code is pretty generic, just saying 'camshaft position sensor defective.' It doesn't specify which one. As for fuel economy, it seems a bit worse than usual, but it's hard to say for sure. Engine performance feels a little down, especially at lower speeds. Did your issue present similarly?

Yep, my LS acted almost exactly the same way. Rough starts, stalling, and a noticeable dip in power. Turned out the encoder wheel on the camshaft was defective. Caused the sensor to read incorrectly. I'd suggest taking it to a reputable shop to get a proper diagnosis. It's probably beyond a simple sensor replacement.

I took it to my mechanic, and you were right – the encoder wheel on the camshaft was the culprit. They replaced it, and the camshaft sensor, and the total cost was 695€. The car is running great again!
