Fuses are good. Battery's about three years old. Could a partially bad battery cause the error and kill the rear defroster, even if the car starts okay?

Possible. Three years isn't that old, but batteries can be unpredictable. My Volvo started fine, but the defroster was a symptom of a bigger electrical problem the weak battery was making worse. Given the error code and the windshield heating issue, I'd get a diagnostic check before replacing parts randomly.

Appreciate the advice. Taking it to a workshop for a diagnostic. Will post what they find. Estimate is 290€.

I had a similar issue with my old Volvo V70. Rear defroster quit, and it was an electrical thing. Did you check the fuses for the auto defrost and thermal window? Could be something simple. How old's your battery?
