Lexus RC AC Issues
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a 2017 Lexus RC experiencing AC issues, specifically the system not cooling and the compressor not engaging. Possible causes discussed include a refrigerant leak or a defective valve within the AC system. It is suggested that due to the complexity and need for specialized tools, taking the car to a qualified workshop is advisable. Yeah, I don't hear the compressor at all. No unusual AC noise either. So, if it's a refrigerant leak, is there any way to confirm that without special tools? Or am I better off just taking it in?

Without proper tools, confirming a refrigerant leak can be tricky. You might visually inspect the AC lines and connections for oily residue, which can indicate a leak point, but that's not always reliable. Given the age and mileage, plus the complete lack of compressor engagement, a defective valve within the AC system is a strong possibility. These valves regulate refrigerant flow, and if one fails, it can shut down the whole system. Honestly, considering the complexity and the need to handle refrigerant safely, taking it to a qualified workshop is the best course of action. They have the equipment to pinpoint the leak, diagnose the valve issue, and recharge the system correctly.

Thanks for the info! Dropped it off at the shop. They confirmed it was a valve issue in the AC system and quoted 1000€ for the repair. Appreciate the help!

Possible causes range from simple to complex. First, when you say it doesn't kick on, do you mean you don't hear the compressor engaging? If so, it could be a refrigerant leak, preventing the pressure switch from activating the compressor. Have you noticed any unusual AC noise recently? A refrigerant leak can sometimes stem from a defective valve or even a pinhole leak in a hose. It would be useful to check the pressure switch, but you'd need the right tools and knowledge to do that safely. A failing expansion valve could also prevent proper cooling, but that usually presents with other symptoms, like fluctuating temperature control.
