Lexus RX Brake Light Switch Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Lexus RX hybrid with 210,000 kilometers had non-functional brake lights and dashboard error messages, diagnosed as a faulty brake light switch. The issue was confirmed by checking bulbs and fuses, which were fine. The problem was resolved by properly securing the brake light switch in its holder, eliminating the error messages and restoring brake light functionality.

Good analogy with the shift key! Makes sense. I did give the switch a wiggle, but didn't take it out completely. Is there anything special I should be looking for when I pull it out? Like, could the connector itself be damaged or corroded? I really don't want to make things worse. And should I expect this to be a dealer only part?

Corrosion is definitely a possibility. Check the connector pins for any green gunk or bent metal. Give them a clean with electrical contact cleaner if you have some. As for 'dealer only,' it depends. Some auto parts stores carry them, but for something like this, a genuine Lexus part might be a safer bet to avoid future headaches. Although, based on the fact that you wiggled it around, it may have just been in a bad position!

Turns out, I'm an idiot. I hadn't pushed the switch far enough into its little holder after inspecting it the other day. Clicked it in properly, and boom, everything's back to normal. No lights on the dash, brake lights working, error code gone. Free fix! Thanks for the help!

Hey there! Yeah, a faulty brake light switch can definitely cause those symptoms. The computer gets confused when it doesn't see the expected signal from the switch. The error in memory plus the light failure points right at the switch. It's like if your keyboard's 'shift' key was stuck - everything would be screwy. Have you checked if the switch is properly connected to the brake pedal?
