Lexus RX Exhaust Leak
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Lexus RX is experiencing a check engine light, rough engine performance, and a strong exhaust odor, suggesting an exhaust leak. The issue may be related to a defective lambda sensor, which can disrupt the exhaust treatment system. Immediate inspection at a service center is advised to prevent potential damage to other components.

The engine light remains constantly illuminated. I don’t have the specific error code. What do you suspect? I am concerned that the catalytic converter might be damaged.

Given that the light remains on, it could very well be a defective lambda sensor causing an exhaust treatment malfunction, like my Insignia. It can throw off the entire system. Have it checked at a workshop ASAP, as prolonged operation could damage other components.

Your diagnosis seems plausible. I will schedule an appointment at a service center to have the lambda sensor checked. They quoted a repair cost of approximately 375€. Thanks!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old 2012 Opel Insignia diesel. The rough running and exhaust smell indicate a potential exhaust leak. Was there any error code when the engine light came on? Is the engine light constantly on, or is it intermittent?
