Good call on the belt, I'll check that. But say it IS the generator... what kind of damage am I looking at? Is it a case of just replacing the unit, or could it have fried other components too?

With my Volvo, just replacing the generator solved it. But honestly, get it to a workshop. A defective generator can cause more issues, like frying the starter motor or even causing engine misfires due to low voltage.

It WAS the generator. Workshop confirmed it. New generator installed for 960€. Thanks for the heads up!

Sounds familiar. Had similar symptoms with my old Volvo V70 - serpentine belt went bad and messed with the whole charging system. Check that first, but if it's not that, it could well be the generator itself. Is the battery low?
