Lexus SC vibrating steering wheel

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2001 Lexus SC with a gasoline engine. The power steering is acting up. I'm getting a vibrating steering wheel, and the handling feels spongy. Plus, there's an error code stored. I've noticed it's way harder to steer, like the power steering is failing completely. Could a defective cable or plug connection really be the culprit?

Interesting symptoms. Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level for the power steering? Low fluid could definitely cause those issues. Also, has the steering rack ever been replaced? A failing rack can definitely cause vibration and spongy feel.

Fluid level is good, I checked that first. And the steering rack hasn't been replaced as far as I know. But could a faulty electric steering component cause the same symptoms, even though it's a hydraulic system?

While it's a hydraulic system, there are still electrical components involved in the power steering assist. If the error memory has stored a code, that strongly suggests an electrical issue is present. It does sound like a defective cable or plug connection of the component may be the cause. Given all the symptoms and the error code, I'd recommend getting it checked by a workshop.

Thanks for the advice! You're right, I'll take it to a shop and have them check the connections and error code. Turns out it was a defective cable connection, and the repair cost me about 95€. Appreciate the help!
