The encoder wheel? No, I haven't checked that. Is it hard to get to? What should I be looking for exactly?

It's not the easiest thing to get to, and you'll need some tools. Honestly, based on my experience, and especially since it's related to the camshaft, I would suggest taking it to a workshop. It could save you a lot of time and potential headaches. In my case, testing the sensor with multimeter didn't lead to any results and I had to go to the workshop anyway.

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate you sharing your experience. I'll take it to my local mechanic.

Sounds familiar! I had similar problems with my old Opel Insignia a few years back. Same symptoms – rough start, stalling, and that dreaded check engine light. Turned out to be a faulty crankshaft sensor. But the camshaft sensor can be the problem as well. Do you have any idea what the encoder wheel on the camshafts is doing?
