Yes, I mean completely dead. No display, no lights, no response to any button press. I haven't tried disconnecting the battery yet. Would that really make a difference?

Yeah, disconnecting the battery is like a hard reset for the car's computer. It's worth a shot before you start tearing things apart. But honestly, if the whole thing is black, and you've checked the fuses, and a reset doesn't fix it, then it's pointing strongly towards a defective display. I hate to say it, but you're probably looking at replacing the head unit. A workshop will likely confirm that. I wouldn't risk trying to fix it myself.

Thanks for the advice. I disconnected the battery, but no luck. Took it to the workshop today, and they confirmed it's a defective display unit. Quoted 725€ for the replacement. Thanks again for your help!

Whoa, that sucks! When you say completely dead, do you mean no display at all? No lights, no response to any buttons? Or is the display on but you're not getting any sound from the speakers? Also, have you tried disconnecting the battery for a bit to see if that resets anything? Sometimes those electronic gremlins just need a kick in the pants.
