Looking for solutions to problems with Audi A6 Diesel 2010: Black smoke, DPF regeneration, preheat indicator and jerking at idle speed

Longer cold start time

Car won't start

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Shaking while idling

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Dear community, I'm currently having a lot of trouble with my 2010 Audi A6 diesel. It smokes black when I accelerate, the cold start takes forever, the DPF regeneration doesn't work, sometimes it won't start at all and the pre-glow indicator doesn't go out. The car also jerks when idling. I suspect a defect in the glow control unit. Have any of you had similar problems and can tell me what was done in the workshop to fix this? I would appreciate your experiences and tips!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Audi A4, model 2008. I am not a car professional, I just have some experience. The problem was identified by the support people at my favorite garage. The fault was diagnosed as "ground connection to glow control unit defective or contact bad". They fixed it for 120 euros. Of course, your problem could be something else as every car is different. Could you please give us more information about your vehicle, e.g. engine size or mileage? That way we could help you more precisely. Hope this helps you!

Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention my mileage, it is 137459 km. I hope this information helps you to help me better!

Hey, thanks for the info! At this mileage, it could actually be glow plugs or the glow control unit. So, your guess could be right. Or it could also be something with the fuel supply. In my case, with my old A4, I had to replace the glow plugs and the control unit, cost me about 250 euros in total. After that, all the symptoms disappeared. In your case, I would suggest having the fault memory read out first, it might help to narrow down the problem. Then I would perhaps have the glow plugs checked or replaced, as they often need replacing at this mileage. Of course, as you say, every situation is unique. But that's my 2 cents on it, based on my experience and the mileage of your car. Hope this helps you!

Thank you very much for your detailed reply and your tips. I will follow your advice and have the fault memory read out and then have the glow plugs checked or replaced. I hope that will solve my problem. Thanks again for your help!

That's great to hear, Dima.K! Faulty glow plugs can indeed cause the symptoms IvyIry described. It's always a good idea to start with the simpler checks like these before moving on to more complex possibilities. IvyIry, please let us know if replacing the glow plugs resolves your issue. Do you have any other questions or concerns?
