Thanks for sharing your experience! My M3 has 64970 KM and was last serviced 3 months ago. I'm getting error codes P1523 and P1189. Everything was working fine until last week when the warnings started appearing all at once during a regular drive. No recent work done except for regular oil change during the last service. Interesting that you mention the wiring harness, that seems way less scary than what I was imagining. Did your mechanic have to replace any parts or just clean and reconnect? Really hoping it's something simple like that and not a major electrical issue. Let me know if those error codes ring any bells for you.

Hey again! Thanks for the additional details about your M3. Those error codes you mentioned actually sound really familiar to what I dealt with on my M5. When I had my issue, my mechanic first just tried cleaning and reconnecting the harness, but that only fixed things temporarily. The warnings came back after a few days. We ended up having to replace the entire steering column wiring harness because there was some corrosion in the connections that wasn't visible at first. The good news is that P1523 and P1189 are typically related to the electrical system rather than mechanical problems. In my case, the total repair with parts and labor came to around 450 Euro, which wasn't cheap but definitely better than what I initially feared it might be! Since your car was recently serviced, maybe something got knocked loose during the oil change. My mechanic explained that these BMWs from the early 2000s are kind of notorious for electrical gremlins, especially in the steering column area. One quick thing you could try before taking it to a shop, disconnect your battery for about 30 minutes, then reconnect it. This sometimes resets the system and clears false warnings. Didn't work for me ultimately, but worth a shot! Let me know what you end up finding out. Really curious if it's the same issue I had!

Thanks for all the detailed help! After seeing how similar our issues are, I'm feeling much better about this whole situation. I tried the battery disconnect trick you suggested but unfortunately, all the warning lights came right back on. Guess I'll need to bite the bullet and take it to my mechanic. I've scheduled an appointment for next week and specifically mentioned the wiring harness issue you experienced. My mechanic said it sounds quite plausible given the age of these cars and the error codes. Really hoping it's just that and not something more complex! The 450 euro repair cost doesn't sound too bad considering all the warnings and problems it's causing. Better to fix it now than wait for it to get worse. I'll definitely update you once I know what the actual problem is. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's super helpful to know what to expect!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2003 BMW M5. Also noticed problems in my 's 325i from the same era. I was getting multiple warning lights too, ABS, brake system, and traction control all lit up like a Christmas tree. Plus, no cruise control. Drove me nuts! Turned out it was just a faulty wiring harness connection under the steering column. The mechanic found that the plug had come slightly loose and was making intermittent contact. The fix was pretty straightforward, they cleaned the connector, secured it properly, and all the warnings disappeared. Cost me about 95 Euro for the diagnostic and repair work. Such a relief it wasn't something more serious! Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: What error codes are you getting exactly? Did these issues start suddenly or develop over time? Have you had any recent work done on the car? Let me know and I'll try to help further!
