M4 Oil Pressure Alert: Warning Signs & Fix Costs

Hey all! My 2019 BMW M4 (gas) with about 160K km is giving me some headaches. The speedo warning and oil pressure lights just came on, and I suspect it might be dirty engine oil causing the trouble. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar warning lights on their M4? What was the actual issue and how much did the repair cost? Would really appreciate some recommendations on how to handle this. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar situation with my 2016 BMW M3 last year. When those warning lights popped up, I initially thought it was just due for an oil change, but it turned out to be more serious. The oil pressure sensor was failing, and there was some metal debris in the oil, which triggered the warnings. Had to get the oil pressure sensor replaced, and they did a thorough engine flush along with fresh oil. They also checked the oil pump since low pressure can damage it. Thankfully, caught it early enough before any major engine damage occurred. The whole thing took about two days at the shop. I'd strongly suggest getting this checked out soon, oil pressure issues aren't something to wait on. If you ignore it, you risk serious engine damage. While my experience was with a different garage than your previous one, I'd recommend finding a BMW specialist who knows these performance engines well. Just my two cents based on what I went through.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! It definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with right now. Just wanted to check, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Really helps to hear from someone who's been through it.

Hey again! Yeah, happy to fill you in on what happened after. I actually just got everything sorted last week, the mechanic found it was indeed contaminated oil causing those warning lights, just like in my previous case. Got it all fixed up and they did a total engine flush plus fresh oil change. The whole thing, including labor and parts, came to 165 € for sorting out the maintenance issues. I've put about 1,000 km on it since the repair and honestly, it's running like a dream now. No warning lights, smooth as butter, and the engine sounds much healthier. Really glad I didn't wait around on getting it checked out. Between you and me, it's such a relief when you find the right mechanic who actually knows what they're doing with these performance BMWs. If you're still worried about your current situation, I'd say don't hesitate to get it looked at, these engines are too nice (and expensive!) to risk any damage. Let me know if you end up getting yours sorted. Always interested to hear how these things turn out!

Thanks for all the detailed info! Just got back from the mechanic actually. You were spot on about getting it checked quickly. Turned out my issue was a bit different though. The oil pressure sensor was completely shot, and they found some minor electrical issues causing those warning lights. The whole thing cost me around 300 €, bit more than I expected, but at least it's fixed now. Funny story, while I was at the shop, my car decided to throw in an extra surprise by making this weird clicking sound. Nearly gave me a heart attack! But the mechanic just laughed and said it was totally normal for these engines when they're cooling down. Can't tell you how relieved I was. The car's running great now, no more warning lights and it feels way smoother than before. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out, definitely saved me from bigger problems down the road!
