Malfunction of engine oil pressure control in Toyota Hilux (2008) - advice and exchange of experience needed
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A Toyota Hilux owner from 2008 is experiencing issues with the oil light coming on, metal shavings in the oil, and a warning light on the speedometer, suspecting an engine oil pressure control malfunction. Another Hilux owner shared a similar experience, where an oily and defective wiring harness on the oil pressure control valve was the cause, suggesting that the issue might be the same. The advice given is to take the vehicle to a garage promptly, especially given the presence of metal shavings, to prevent more severe engine damage.

Hey, thanks for your answer! My Hilux has an automatic transmission and yes, it has four-wheel drive. It has 249756 km on it now and I had the last service about 6 months ago. Your experience sounds pretty similar to my situation, so it could well be the same problem. Do you think I should just take it straight to the garage or is there anything else I could check myself? 350 doesn't sound like much fun, but if it helps, it's worth it.

Hey, thanks for the additional info! Your situation sounds really similar to mine at the time. With the mileage and all-wheel drive, it may well be the same problem. Well, you could still try measuring the oil pressure if you have the necessary tools. But to be honest, if the warning light is already on and you've also found metal shavings in the oil, I wouldn't experiment too much. This combination clearly indicates a serious problem. I'm afraid it's better to take your Toyota to the garage as soon as possible. Even if 350 euros is no small amount, believe me, it's better to spend it now than to have an engine failure later that would cost many times more. Oh yes, and be sure to tell your mechanic about the metal shavings, they could also be important for diagnostics. Good luck with your Hilux, keep your fingers crossed that it gets fixed quickly and cheaply!

Hey, thanks for the advice! I won't risk it and will go straight to the garage tomorrow morning. It's better this way than having major damage afterwards. I'll definitely let the mechanic know about the metal shavings. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and will be fixed quickly. Thanks again for your help and for keeping your fingers crossed!

Hey, I had something similar with my Toyota Hilux, but it's 2 years younger, so from 2010. I have a bit of experience with cars, so I initially tried to fix it myself, of course. What happened was that the wiring harness on the oil pressure control valve was oily and defective. I had it repaired for a total of 350 euros. It wasn't the cheapest day, I tell you! But, to help you further, what type of transmission does your Toyota have? And does your Hilux have four-wheel drive? A bit more information would really help to see if it's the same problem.
