Malibu Hybrid rough running engine

Hey, I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2012 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid (98,574 kilometers). Lately, the engine's been acting up – like it's running way too rich. I've noticed a definite decrease in engine power, and the check engine light is constantly on. It also runs really rough, almost like it's misfiring, and my fuel consumption has gone through the roof! Plus, it feels like the car is jerking when I try to accelerate. I've checked the air filter, and it seems clean, but I'm not sure where else to look. Could a bad catalytic converter or oxygen sensor cause these symptoms? I'm pulling my hair out here!

Summary of the thread

The 2012 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is experiencing rough engine performance, decreased power, increased fuel consumption, and a persistent check engine light, suggesting it might be running too rich. Potential causes include a defective fuel injector, a bad catalytic converter, or a faulty oxygen sensor. The recommended solution is to have a professional mechanic inspect the fuel injectors, which in this case, resolved the issue after replacement.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing these difficulties with your vehicle. I own a Chevrolet Malibu as well, although it is not a hybrid. I experienced similar issues with my engine running poorly, and the check engine light illuminated. Based on your description, it sounds like you might have a defective fuel injector. Have you considered having those inspected?

Thanks for the quick reply! A defective fuel injector, huh? I hadn't really considered that. Is there a way to check the fuel injectors myself, or is that something best left to a professional? And how did you figure out that was the problem with yours?

Given the symptoms you've described, and the potential for further damage if not addressed correctly, I'd recommend having a trusted mechanic or workshop inspect your fuel injectors. It is possible to diagnose yourself, but requires specific tools and knowledge to prevent making the issue worse. In my case, the workshop identified the defective injector and replaced it. This immediately solved the problem.

Okay, thanks so much for the advice! I'll take it to my local mechanic and ask them to check the fuel injectors. Hopefully, that's the issue, and it's an easy fix. Just got the car back from the workshop. It was indeed a defective fuel injector! Repair cost was 515€. Runs like new again!
