Marea power loss ECU errors

Hi, I'm having a major headache with my 2006 Fiat Marea diesel. The car is losing power, especially when I try to accelerate. Also, the check engine light is on and I had the error codes read, and it says something about the engine control unit being defective. It's got 230606 km on the clock. Could this be a really expensive problem?

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Fiat Marea diesel was experiencing power loss and an illuminated check engine light, with error codes indicating a potential engine control unit (ECU) defect. The issue was suspected to be related to a faulty main relay, which can cause intermittent power loss and trigger ECU errors. After taking the car to a workshop, the main relay was confirmed as the problem, replaced, and the car's performance returned to normal, avoiding the need for a costly ECU replacement.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

From the symptoms and error code, a defective engine control unit (ECU) does seem likely. Before jumping to conclusions, have you checked the main relay that supplies power to the ECU? A faulty relay can cause intermittent power loss and trigger those error codes. Is the reduced engine power constant, or does it come and go?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the relay myself, I'm not really sure where to find it or how to test it. The power loss seems to be getting worse over time, it's mostly constant now, but sometimes it seems a little better for a few minutes. Does that give you any more clues?

Given the progressive nature of the power loss, a failing main relay is a strong possibility. However, without proper testing equipment, it's difficult to diagnose definitively. Considering the ECU involvement, I'd advise taking it to a qualified workshop for a proper diagnosis to avoid further complications. It could be a relay, wiring, or the ECU itself.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it was the main relay causing the ECU errors. They replaced it, and everything is running perfectly now. The total cost was 120€ which is a lot better than a new ECU! Really appreciate the help!
