Marea rough shifting emergency mode

My 2001 Fiat Marea, gasoline engine, is acting up. Engine light is on, and sometimes it goes into emergency mode. Gear shifts feel rough, almost like grinding. I've checked the basics, but not sure what's up.

Rough shifting and emergency mode on an older Fiat could be a few things. Does the light come on immediately, or only after driving for a bit? Any error codes showing up? And is the gearbox oil level correct?

The light comes on after driving for a while, and yes, there's an error code. Something about transmission oil temperature sensor. Oil level I haven't checked yet, where exactly should I look?

Ah, oil temperature sensor... That, plus the late light and rough shifting, could indicate low gearbox oil. I'm not familiar with the Marea specifically, but usually there's a dipstick near the transmission, or a fill plug you can check. But honestly, with those symptoms and that code, it might be worth getting it checked by someone who knows those gearboxes. It could be more than just low oil.

I checked the oil, and it was indeed very low. Topped it up, but the problem persisted. Took it to a workshop, turned out the sensor was faulty AND there were some leaks. Got it fixed, cost me 365€, shifts smooth as butter now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
