Mark X brake light failure

I'm having some weird issues with my 2017 Toyota Mark X, gasoline engine. I'm getting a brake light failure, an error message popping up, and the error memory is storing a fault code. I've checked the bulbs and fuses, and they seem fine. Could it be the brake light switch? Anyone else experienced this?

Dude, sounds familiar! I had a similar issue on my Mark X. It could definitely be the brake light switch. It's a cheap part that sits right by the brake pedal and tells the car when you're hitting the brakes. If it's faulty, the car will freak out and throw all sorts of errors. Have you checked if your brake lights are actually working when you press the pedal?

Yeah, no brake lights when I press the pedal. So, if it is the switch, is it something I can replace myself, or am I better off taking it to a workshop? Is there any way to test the switch before replacing it?

Okay, no brake lights pretty much confirms it's the switch, or at least something in that circuit. You could try replacing it yourself; it's usually just a couple of screws and a connector. But honestly, those things can be a pain to get to, and sometimes the new switch needs to be calibrated with a scan tool. Plus, fiddling with brake components… I'd recommend getting a pro to take a look, just to be safe. It's a vehicle safety thing after all.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to my local guy, and you were spot on – it was the brake light switch. Apparently, the previous owner had installed it incorrectly, putting stress on it. He reinstalled it properly, and now it's working perfectly. Zero cost to fix. Appreciate the help!
