Master torque converter issue

My 2002 Renault Master, diesel engine, is playing up. The check engine light and transmission light are both on. Getting some pretty rough shifts, feels like it's slipping. Sometimes hear a grinding noise too. I had a look at the error codes and it's pointing to a torque converter issue. Anyone had similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Renault Master with a diesel engine is experiencing issues with the check engine and transmission lights on, rough shifting, and a grinding noise, indicating a potential torque converter problem. The error codes suggest a faulty torque converter, possibly due to a failing lock-up clutch. It is advised to have the vehicle inspected by a specialist in automatic transmissions to prevent further damage, as continuing to drive could worsen the issue.

Ouch, sounds nasty. Those symptoms definitely point towards transmission trouble, and the error code seals the deal. Slipping, grinding, and warning lights are classic signs. How many kilometers are on the clock? Has the transmission fluid ever been changed? A faulty torque converter can cause all sorts of mayhem, especially with the lock-up clutch failing. Ignoring it will only make it worse and potentially damage the entire transmission. Is the grinding noise constant, or only when shifting?

It's done 122283 km. I'm not sure about the transmission fluid, I've only had it a short while. The grinding is mostly when shifting, yeah. Is it definitely the torque converter then?

Okay, given the mileage and the symptoms, a defective torque converter is highly probable. The grinding during shifts further supports that. The lock-up clutch inside the converter is likely failing. While I can't say definitively without inspecting it myself, all the signs are there. You really need to get it checked out by a workshop that specializes in automatic transmissions. Continuing to drive it could cause more damage. Be prepared for a hefty bill though.

Thanks for the info. I took it to a garage, and you were spot on. Torque converter is knackered. They quoted me 2120€ for the repair. Ouch!
