Matiz EGR Valve Issue

Good day, I am writing to you today regarding my 2005 Chevrolet Matiz, equipped with a gasoline engine. I've been experiencing a constellation of issues that I believe are interconnected. For some time now, I've noticed a distinct reduction in engine power, coupled with the persistent illumination of the check engine light. More alarmingly, there's smoke emanating during acceleration, accompanied by rough engine running and an increase in fuel consumption. Furthermore, I've observed jerking during acceleration, and a rather loud hissing sound when I attempt to pick up speed. After some preliminary research, I suspect a defective exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve might be the culprit. Could any fellow Matiz owners offer insights or guidance?

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Chevrolet Matiz owner is experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough engine running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These issues are suspected to be caused by a defective exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. A fellow Matiz owner suggests checking the vacuum lines for cracks, but ultimately advises seeking professional help. The workshop confirms the EGR valve defect, leading to its repair.

Hey there! Sounds like you're having a rough time. I had something similar with my Matiz, though it was a while back. The hissing and the loss of power really rings a bell. The EGR valve is like the lungs of your engine; if it's clogged, the whole thing suffocates. Did you try checking the vacuum lines to the EGR valve? Sometimes a cracked hose can cause those symptoms too.

Thank you for your prompt response and helpful analogy! I confess, my technical expertise is somewhat limited. Could you elaborate on how one might inspect the vacuum lines and where exactly to locate them? I appreciate your patience and guidance in this matter.

No worries, we all start somewhere. Honestly, if you're not super comfortable with engines, messing with the vacuum lines might be more trouble than it's worth. They're those little rubber tubes connected to the EGR valve – follow them and check for cracks or breaks. But with all those symptoms, especially the smoke and rough running, it's probably the EGR valve itself that's jammed. My advice? Get it checked out by a decent workshop. Could save you a bigger headache down the road.

I appreciate your sound advice. Given the complexity and potential for further complications, I have indeed decided to seek professional assistance. The workshop confirmed your suspicion of a defective EGR valve, and the total repair cost amounted to 355€. Thank you again for your insights and for pointing me in the right direction!
