Matrix Coolant Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Toyota Matrix owner is experiencing coolant loss and a check engine light, with an error code indicating low coolant. The issue could be due to a coolant leak or a more serious problem like a head gasket failure. After checking for visible leaks and air pockets, a pressure test at a shop reveals a small leak in a radiator hose, which is then replaced, resolving the issue.

I've looked around the reservoir and hoses, and I don't see any obvious leaks. It's losing a noticeable amount, maybe a cup or two every few weeks. How do I check for air pockets properly?

Okay, a cup or two every few weeks is beyond just normal evaporation. If you can't spot any external leaks, and you've got air pockets sorted, you might need to get it pressure tested. I'd recommend taking it to a trusted shop before it overheats and causes more damage.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a shop, and they found a small leak in one of the radiator hoses. They replaced the hose and topped off the coolant. Cost me 52€, but at least it's fixed!

Low coolant on a Matrix is usually a leak somewhere. Check around the coolant reservoir and all the hoses first. Any signs of dried coolant? Also, are you losing a lot of coolant or just a little bit over time? Have you checked for air pockets after topping up?
