Matrix Diesel Power Loss and Smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Hyundai Matrix diesel is experiencing significant power loss and excessive smoke during acceleration, with the engine light on. The suspected cause is a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) issue, as similar symptoms were resolved by addressing DPF problems in another vehicle. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle properly diagnosed and potentially replace the DPF, as confirmed by a workshop.

Yep, the engine light came on at pretty much the same time as the power loss and smoke. Did you try forcing a regeneration cycle, or did you just go straight to replacing the filter?

I tried the regeneration thing but it didn't do anything for me. I'd suggest getting it properly diagnosed, but those symptoms sure sound like DPF issues. Best visit a workshop.

Thanks for the info. I'll take it to a workshop to get it checked out properly. I fear you're right about the DPF – workshop confirmed it. Quoted 1550€ for filter replacement. Ouch!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Hyundai i30 diesel. Reduced engine power and smoke sound very familiar. Did the engine light come on at the same time? Could be a sensor fault triggering it.
