Matrix Gear Shift Indicator Problem

Good day, I have a 2002 Hyundai Matrix with a gasoline engine. The gear shift indicator display is completely unresponsive, making it impossible to engage the gears. The automatic transmission shifts uncleanly, and I'm hearing grinding noises when shifting. There's an error stored, but the gear selection display is without function. I suspect a defective control unit, dreading the potential 1000€ repair cost. Has anyone else encountered something like this?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Hyundai Matrix owner experienced issues with an unresponsive gear shift indicator, erratic automatic transmission shifting, and grinding noises. The suspected cause was a defective control unit, which was confirmed after a workshop diagnosis. Replacing the control unit resolved the gear shifting problems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! That sounds like a real headache. I had a somewhat similar problem with my old Opel Astra. The symptoms weren't exactly the same, but the gear indicator was acting up, and the transmission was behaving erratically. Did you check the transmission fluid level and condition? Also, have you tried scanning the car for specific error codes? That might give you a better idea of which sensor or component is failing.

Thanks for the quick reply! I appreciate the advice. I did check the transmission fluid level, and it seemed to be within the normal range, but I'm not entirely sure about the condition. Yes, there were errors stored, but they were rather generic and didn't pinpoint a specific sensor. They pointed to a general transmission malfunction. Could you elaborate on how you narrowed down the issue on your Opel Astra?

Okay, generic codes are the worst! On my Astra, after a lot of digging and checking the wiring, it turned out to be a faulty sensor on the transmission itself. But honestly, given the range of problems you're seeing – no display, shifting issues, noises – it really does sound like the control unit could be the culprit. At this point, I'd strongly recommend taking it to a trusted workshop that specializes in automatic transmissions. They have the proper diagnostic tools and expertise to pinpoint the exact problem without just throwing parts at it.

Thanks a bunch for the advice and sharing your experience! I took your advice and brought the Matrix to a reputable local workshop. After extensive diagnosis, they confirmed that it was indeed the control unit and replaced it. The gear shifting is now working as expected. Again, thanks!
