Matrix key fob battery issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Toyota Matrix owner experienced issues with the keyless entry system, receiving a 'key battery low' warning and facing difficulties with unlocking and locking the car. The suspected cause was a dead key fob battery. It was suggested to test the spare key fob to confirm the issue. Upon replacing the battery in the original key fob, the problems were resolved, and the error memory was cleared.

Good call on the spare key, hadn't thought of that! So if the spare works fine, it's definitely just the battery in the original fob causing all this headache?

Yes, if the spare works fine, the problem is almost certainly a weak battery in the other key fob. It's like a water tap slightly open. Officially, the error memory should be checked, probably it's just a low voltage issue, still I would advise to visit the workshop.

Thanks for the tip! Changed the battery, and all is working. Error memory cleared. Cost me 37€. You saved me a lot of time!

Sounds familiar. I've experienced similar problems with my Matrix key fob. When the battery is nearing its end of life, you may face those issues. Have you tried the spare key to check if the symptoms persist?
