Matrix overheating issue

I'm having a weird issue with my 2003 Hyundai Matrix, gasoline engine. The engine overheats, and the check engine light pops on. I checked the basics, like coolant level, but I suspect the radiator fan isn't kicking in when it should. Could it be a defective speed sensor causing this?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Hyundai Matrix is experiencing engine overheating and a check engine light issue. The initial suspicion is that the radiator fan isn't activating properly, possibly due to a defective speed sensor. A suggestion is made to inspect the fan motor for any visible issues. Upon professional evaluation, it is confirmed that the fan motor was faulty, likely due to the defective speed sensor, and both components are replaced, resolving the overheating problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Oh, overheating is never fun! I had a similar scare with my old Peugeot 207. Same symptoms – overheating, check engine light. I'm no expert, but did you check the fan motor itself? Is it spinning freely, or does it seem stuck or wobbly? Maybe a simple visual inspection will give you a clue. I hope it is not the temperature control unit since it could affect the overall engine cooling.

Good point! I'll check the fan motor itself. You mentioned the fan motor; was that actually the problem with your Peugeot, or did it turn out to be something else entirely?

Yeah, it was the fan motor in the end. A mechanic tested it for power and found it was dead. Apparently, it's a common thing. But since you suspect the speed sensor, it's probably best to get it checked by a professional to be sure. Don't want to risk causing more damage. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were right, it was the fan motor! It looks like the defective speed sensor caused the car radiator to stop working. New fan motor and speed sensor fitted, cost me around 250€ but everything is running smoothly now. Really appreciate the help!
