Matrix Parking Heater Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Toyota Matrix owner experienced issues with the parking heater, which couldn't be activated and stored an error in the memory. The suspected cause was a problem with the auxiliary heating system. A faulty glow plug was identified as the most likely issue, confirmed by a workshop diagnosis. After replacing the defective glow plug, the auxiliary heater functioned correctly again.

Where exactly is the glow plug located in the auxiliary heating system? Is it difficult to access and replace without special tools?

It's usually integrated within the auxiliary heater unit itself, often near the exhaust. Given the error memory and symptoms, a defective glow plug is probable. Diagnosis often requires manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools. I would suggest a workshop visit for diagnosis. It could save you time and money.

Thank you for the advice. The diagnosis at the workshop confirmed a defective glow plug. Repair cost was 440€. The auxiliary heater now works as expected.

Sounds like a faulty glow plug, which provides heat to start the parking heater. The heating system relies on several components. Have you checked the heat control unit, temperature sensor, or blower motor? Those could also cause issues but glow plug is the most likely.
