Matrix poor fuel economy stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Hyundai Matrix diesel with 66,000 kilometers is experiencing declining fuel economy, stalling when idling, and a check engine light, accompanied by noticeable smoke during acceleration. The suspected cause is a failing mass air flow meter (LMM). A similar issue was resolved by replacing the LMM, and it is advised to check for air intake leaks or air filter damage. Replacing the LMM resolved the problem, confirming the initial suspicion.

I checked the air filter, and it seemed fine. I didn't notice any obvious intake leaks, but I'll inspect it more thoroughly. Did replacing the LMM completely resolve your issue? Do you recommend a specific brand or part number?

Replacing the LMM resolved the issue entirely. However, I would still advise you to take your car to a workshop so they can check the sensor and replace it if necessary. It is a relatively common problem with this model.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions and the advice. I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – the LMM was defective. It cost me around 365€ for the replacement, but it's running smoothly now. Appreciate the help!

I had similar symptoms with my Matrix. Higher fuel consumption and engine stalling point towards a faulty LMM. The check engine light usually confirms this. Have you checked for any obvious air intake leaks or damage to the air filter? That can sometimes throw off the air-fuel ratio and affect the LMM readings.
