Maverick Oil Pressure Warning

I own a 2001 Ford Maverick with a gasoline engine. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp lights up intermittently. I also hear loud mechanical noises emanating from the engine. The vehicle has 212430 km on the clock. What could be the cause?

That sounds concerning. I drive a Maverick as well and experienced something similar a while back. Did you notice if the oil pressure warning is more frequent at lower engine speeds, such as idle? Has there been any recent work done, like an oil change, that might have introduced a thinner oil than recommended?

The oil pressure warning indeed becomes more frequent at lower engine speeds. I performed an oil change a month ago. The oil I used was of the correct grade.

Okay. It sounds increasingly like a potential oil pump issue, particularly with the noises you are hearing. Think of the oil pump as the heart of your engine's lubrication system. If it's failing, critical engine components won't receive enough oil, leading to both the warning light and those concerning noises. Given the mileage and symptoms, a defect in the oil pump is a strong possibility. I recommend having a workshop inspect the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge and check the pump's functionality.

Thank you for your diagnosis. I took the vehicle to a workshop, and they confirmed a defect in the oil pump. The repair cost 755€.
