Maverick VANOS Solenoid Issue

I'm having trouble with my 2000 Ford Maverick diesel, around 54000 km on the clock. The check engine light is on and off, and I'm burning more fuel than usual. I'm thinking it might be the inlet VANOS, maybe a bad camshaft solenoid valve or a power issue. Any ideas?

Hey! I had something similar happen on my Maverick. Check engine light, the whole nine yards. Fuel economy went straight to the dogs. I'd heard whispers about VANOS problems on these, so you might be onto something. How's the engine sound? Any misfires?

Thanks for getting back to me. The engine sounds okay, no misfires that I can hear. Was the VANOS failure you had directly related to the solenoid?

Yep, pretty sure it was the solenoid. I messed around with it a bit but honestly, I'd take it to a trusted shop. Could be a bigger problem if you keep driving it like that.

Got it. Thanks for the advice. It turned out to be the VANOS solenoid. Cost me 250€ to get it sorted.
