Maxima Transmission Issues

Hey, I've got a problem with my 2003 Nissan Maxima (gas engine) with only 32274 km on the clock. The check engine light and transmission light are both on. It feels like the gearbox slips sometimes, and the shifts aren't smooth at all. I even hear some grinding noises occasionally. I plugged in an OBD scanner, and it threw up an error code. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Nissan Maxima is experiencing transmission issues, indicated by the check engine and transmission lights, along with symptoms like slipping, rough shifts, and grinding noises. An OBD scanner revealed an error code related to the torque converter lock-up clutch. The likely cause is a defective automatic transmission converter. The recommended solution is to have a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the issue, as it involves complex transmission components.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my Maxima a while back. Same symptoms - the lights, the slipping, the noises... it was a nightmare. Have you noticed anything specific that triggers it, like going uphill or after the engine's been running for a while? It could be related to the automatic gearbox. Do you have the error code available?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't really pinpointed what triggers it, to be honest. It seems somewhat random. The error code was something about the torque converter lock-up clutch. Does that sound like the same thing you experienced?

Yep, that's exactly what it was for me – the torque converter lock-up clutch. The error code confirms it. I went through hell trying to diagnose it myself, but eventually, I had to bite the bullet and take it to a professional. It's likely that your automatic transmission converter is defective. These things are complex, so it’s best to let a good mechanic handle it unless you're seriously experienced with automatic transmissions. I ended up paying around 2120€ for the repair. Not cheap, but worth it to get the car running smoothly again.

Thanks a lot for the info! Sounds like I'm headed to the workshop. I really appreciate you sharing your experience. I'll let you know how it goes. It was indeed the torque converter and all is fixed now.
