Mazda MPV Diesel 2005 Experiencing Reduced Power, Idling Shakes, Acceleration Jolts, and Unusual Hissing Noise

Hey! Got some worries about my old beast, a 2005 Mazda MPV Diesel with a hefty 230,247 KM on her. Been seeing the check engine light on, feeling less engine power, and noticing she's shakier at idles and jerky during acceleration. Plus, there's a noticeable loud hissing sound when I step on the gas. I had a dodgy mechanic experience last time and I'm thinking it could be something to do with the swirl flap control on the intake manifold. Anyone out there experienced these symptoms and can throw a bit of light my way about what it was and how your mechanic handled it? Would really appreciate your thoughts. Cheers!

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Mazda MPV Diesel is experiencing reduced power, idling shakes, acceleration jolts, and a loud hissing noise, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause is a faulty swirl flap control on the intake manifold, which regulates air intake to the engine cylinders. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the intake manifold, leading to improved performance.

Hey! Sounds you're right on the money with your suspicions about the swirl flap. I experienced almost exactly what you're describing with my 2008 Mazda6 Diesel. Check engine light was my first clue. Then, the ride got less smooth, especially when idling and during acceleration. The hissing sound you're mentioning brings back memories - it was a distinct "air escaping" kind of noise whenever I gave her some juice. Turned out the swirl flap was indeed the culprit. It was quite a severe issue as it interferes with your car's power and fuel economy because it regulates air intake to the engine cylinders. My mechanic had to replace the intake manifold to properly address it. Hope this helps put your mind at ease a bit. It's a nasty problem but once fixed, your Mazda will feel like a new car again. Good luck!

Hey there, It's reassuring to hear from someone who's been through the same tough spot. I'm getting more convinced that the swirl flap may be at the heart of my Mazda's unruly behavior. Sounds like getting the intake manifold replaced fixed the issue for you, right? Out of curiosity, do you recall how much that repair set you back by? And has anything else cropped up related to this since your repair? Just trying to brace myself for what lies ahead! Cheers!

Hey! Definitely, the swirl flap issue was no fun and quite a hassle, but things have been smooth sailing since I got it all sorted out. Yep, you got it right; the issue was resolved by replacing the intake manifold. It made a world of difference! As for the cost, I shelled out about 865€ to get the pesky broken swirl flap fixed. I know, it sounds a bit steep, but believe me, it's totally worth fixing if it's causing the problem. Since then, my Mazda's been humming along beautifully without any more problems related to this particular issue. Hang in there! Relief is just around the mechanic's corner! Cheers!

Hey! Indeed, hearing about your experience is comforting! That price tag is a tough pill to swallow, but if it gets my ol' Mazda back on her A-game, it’s a necessary evil. Your insight about the potential fix and the subsequent smooth performance has given me some assurance. Fingers crossed, hoping for the best with my mechanic visit! Cheers!
