Megane power loss rough running

My 2000 Renault Megane (gasoline engine) is playing up. It's done 111361 km. Losing power, engine light's on, and it's smoking when I accelerate. Running rough, drinking more fuel, jerks a bit, and there's a hissing noise now too. Suspect the EGR valve. Anyone else had this?

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Megane, although I can't recall the exact year. Reduced power, rough running, and the dreaded engine light. Have you noticed if it's worse when the engine is cold? High fuel consumption is definitely a symptom to watch out for, it can ruin the emissions test

Yeah, it is worse when cold. I thought it might be linked to the catalytic converter needing replacement. This is not a common thing for diesel engines, correct? How did you fix the recirculation issue in the end?

A faulty catalytic converter can cause similar problems, but the hissing sound makes me think it's more likely the EGR valve. It's quite common for them to get clogged up. While cleaning might help temporarily, in my experience, replacement is the only long-term solution. If you're not mechanically inclined, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. Ignoring it can lead to further problems.

Took it to the workshop. You were spot on – EGR valve was shot. 355€ later and it's all sorted.
