Megane transmission oil pressure

Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 2021 Renault Megane with a gasoline engine. It's done 139268 km. The engine warning light keeps coming on, and sometimes the transmission warning light as well. I've scanned the error memory, and it's showing a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. When driving, the gearbox sometimes goes into emergency mode, and the shifts feel really unclean, almost like it's slipping. I've even heard some grinding noises when shifting a few times. Could this be related to low gearbox oil?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Renault Megane owner experienced issues with the engine and transmission warning lights, along with unclean shifts and grinding noises. The error memory indicated a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. The problem was suspected to be related to low gearbox oil, which can cause such symptoms. The solution involved checking and topping up the transmission oil and replacing the faulty oil pressure sensor, resulting in smooth operation afterward.

Hey, I've got a Megane too, though a slightly older one. Sounds familiar. Those symptoms, especially the slipping and grinding, could definitely point to low oil. The pressure sensor fault is likely a consequence of that. Have you checked the oil level in the transmission? It's a pain to get to on these cars, but that's the first thing I'd rule out.

Thanks for the quick reply! No, I haven't checked the oil level yet, I wasn't even sure where to begin looking. Is it a dipstick situation, or is there a specific procedure I need to follow? And if it is low, what kind of oil does the transmission take?

Okay, so there's no dipstick on these gearboxes. You'll usually find a fill plug and a separate level plug on the side of the transmission casing. To check the level, you need to remove the level plug with the engine running at operating temperature; oil should just trickle out. If nothing comes out, it's low. As for the right oil, it's critical to use the correct spec. The workshop manual should specify which type is needed, or any Renault service point can advise. But with those symptoms showing up, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. Running it low on oil for too long can wreck the gearbox.

Thanks a lot for the help! I took it to a local mechanic, and they confirmed it was a faulty oil pressure sensor due to low oil. They replaced the sensor and topped up the oil. The total cost was 365€. Everything seems to be running smoothly now!
