Mercedes A Klasse Diesel exhaust issue

My 2015 Mercedes A Klasse Diesel has a warning light and reduced engine power at 125805 km. There's also smoke from the exhaust during acceleration and a strong smell. Diagnostics suggest low diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure. Could a defective exhaust back pressure sensor cause these symptoms?

Sounds familiar! I had something similar happen with my A Klasse. Reduced power and that awful smell. Check your exhaust back pressure sensor, that was the culprit for me. Is the engine running rough at all? I remember mine was idling strangely before the light even came on. These emission control systems are a pain when DPF issues pop up.

Thanks for your reply. Can you elaborate on the specific symptoms you experienced that made you suspect the exhaust back pressure sensor? Did you see any unusual readings when monitoring the exhaust system parameters, specifically related to low pressure?

Yes, low pressure was the key. The car felt sluggish, especially uphill. The smell was like burning rubber, pretty strong. Honestly, I didn't do any deep dives into the exhaust system parameters myself. After experiencing the rough idle and performance drop, plus the smell, I took it straight to the workshop. They confirmed it was the sensor. Best to get it checked out professionally, could save you time and potential headaches.

I appreciate your feedback. Based on your recommendation, I had the vehicle inspected. The diagnosis confirmed a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, as suspected. The repair, including parts and labor, cost 245€. The vehicle is now working well. Thank you again for your time and assistance.
