Mercedes B Klasse Automatic Transmission Issue

My 2009 Mercedes B Klasse with a Gasoline engine is giving me fits. The automatic transmission seems busted. I've got 285805 km on the clock. The check engine light and transmission indicator are both on, the gearbox slips and shifts roughly, and there's this awful grinding noise when it changes gears. My mechanic says there's an error stored related to the automatic transmission converter fault. He suspects a defective automatic transmission converter and quoted me 2120€ for the transmission repair. Could this really be a converter fault? Has anyone experienced an engine surge with similar symptoms and error messages? Is this auto transmission repair price reasonable?

I understand your concern. I have a Mercedes B Klasse as well, although a slightly different specification. I experienced similar symptoms not long ago – the engine surge, unclean shifts, and warning lights. In my case, it was indeed related to the automatic transmission. Did your mechanic mention anything specific about the torque converter? It's a component in the automatic transmission that essentially acts as a fluid coupling, transferring engine power to the transmission. A converter fault can cause all sorts of shifting problems.

Thanks for the reply! He just mentioned the error code pointed to the torque converter lock-up clutch. He said something about it not engaging or disengaging properly. Did you also have grinding noises, and was it definitely the converter in your case, or was there anything else involved in the transmission repair?

In my situation, the grinding noise was present, though not constant. The definitive diagnosis came after a thorough inspection and testing of the automatic transmission. While other components could contribute, the primary culprit was the torque converter. Given your mechanic's diagnosis and the error code, it does sound like a likely cause. I would advise getting a second opinion from a reputable workshop specializing in automatic transmissions to confirm the diagnosis before committing to the transmission repair.

I took your advice and went to a transmission specialist. They confirmed it was the torque converter lock-up clutch after a more thorough diagnostic. They showed me the wear on the clutch pack. I went ahead with the auto transmission repair, and thankfully, it fixed everything. Cost was pretty much what my original mechanic quoted. Thanks again for the help!
