Vacuum leaks, huh? Where exactly should I be looking for those? Is there any chance it could mess with the catalytic converter, or anything related to vehicle emissions?

Vacuum lines are generally small rubber hoses connected to various engine components. Inspect them for cracks or disconnections. Regarding your catalytic converter, a malfunctioning EGR valve can, over time, impact its efficiency due to improper combustion. Given the severity of your symptoms, I would recommend a professional diagnosis to ascertain the precise issue and prevent further damage.

I appreciate the insight. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on - the EGR valve was jammed solid. I got it replaced, and the bill came to 355€. Runs like a dream now. Thanks again!

I had a similar issue with my Mercedes C Klasse, although I have the petrol version. The symptoms you describe certainly point towards the EGR valve. However, it would be prudent to also investigate potential vacuum leaks, as these can mimic EGR valve problems. Have you checked for any obvious signs of leaks around the engine bay?
